According to a Google, there are nearly 130 million books in the world. That being said, it’s easy to see how they can be grouped into some more obscure genres and subgenres that most people have never heard of. Here are a few of the genres that we discovered while digging around, who knows, you may end up finding one or more that you’re curious about!
Biopunk. This genre includes stories are about genetic experiments gone wrong, focusing especially on where an human or animal’s DNA is changed which of course leads more often than not, to things turning violent. Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton is a perfect example of this kind of story.
Hard-Boiled. No, we haven’t strayed, we are still talking about books. Very similar to crime fiction, this genre includes stories where the detectives are usually more cynical and maybe a little somber, and the the writing is most often more graphic. The dialogue is quick, and lots of casual slang is thrown around. An example of this genre is The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain.
Comedy of Manners. The name of the genre sort of speaks for itself. These books are satirical and mock the pretentiousness of social classes and manners. An example would be Soulless by Gail Carriger.
