7 New Healthy Habits for The New Year and Decade

On January 1st, not only did we begin a new year, but we also welcomed a brand-new decade. To most of us, it seems a little surreal to be welcoming the year 2020. Like somehow, we closed our eyes and woke up in the future. However, the beginning of a new decade is a perfect time to dream up new goals and set intentions for new healthy habits.

Below, we’ve created a list of 7 new healthy habits you can implement in your life for a healthy, happy new year and decade:

  1. Start a Gratitude Journal. Getting into the daily habit of writing down what you’re thankful for comes with more benefits than you may have thought. Read more about keeping a gratitude journal here.
  1. Begin a yoga practice. A common myth around yoga is that you need to be super flexible to be able to practice. This is actually far from the truth; you can start anywhere – and your body and mind will thank you for it!
  1. Practice meditation. More and more studies are showing that meditation can have a profoundly positive impact on day to day life. If you’re not sure where to start, there are plenty of guided meditations on platforms like YouTube and Spotify that will point you in the right direction.
  1. Exercise on a regular basis. It can be very daunting to commit yourself to daily exercise at a gym or making the time to go for a run every day. Start small. Dedicate 15 minutes a day, or every other day, to physical activity that gets your heart rate up. You can find fabulous short workout videos online to help get you started.
  1. Head out into nature, often. Plan in opportunities for yourself to get out into nature as often as you can. Even once a week is perfect! Go for a walk in a forest, along the ocean, near a river or a lake, anywhere where you can tune into the sounds of nature and allow the routines of daily life to fall away.
  1. Connect on a deeper level with the people in your life. If you catch yourself thinking about someone or smiling at a fond memory, tell them! One of the gifts of the internet is the ability to get in touch with anyone, anywhere, at any time.
  1. Read more books. Reading is one of the pleasures of life. Not only does it provide the opportunity for escape and the ability to submerge ourselves in worlds of our choosing, but it also exercises our brains and expands our vocabulary.
