Who doesn’t aspire to be happy? Surely, everyone will raise their hands and many people will say that they already are. For some human beings, happiness is in the simple details; for others, it is nothing more than an unanswered enigma. Meanwhile, the United Nations General Assembly decreed, in 2012, that there should be a day to remember the importance of happiness as a fundamental human goal. March 20, International Day of Happiness, was the date designated to commemorate that universal aspiration.
Although there are parameters to measure the levels or degrees of happiness having to do with economic aspects, health, and education, among others, some approaches maintain that happiness is not the destination but the path. Others perceive it as the summit to which you have to climb after going through a number of challenges.
Perhaps just having a delicious coffee at A Page in the Sun, while enjoying a pleasant read, will provide you with a dose of happiness that you will want to repeat permanently. In the name of that ritual, we will leave you with 5 books about happiness:
1.- Authentic happiness, by Martin E. P. Seligman. This North American author focuses on detecting human strengths through positive psychology, to cultivate them in favor of happiness. A point of view that goes beyond optimism.
2.- Flow: a psychology of happiness, by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. The author, of Hungarian origin, has developed a theory based on the concept of flow, that is, you can achieve "optimal experiences", in which the mind develops creatively and fully engages with what is done.
3.- The habits of a happy brain, by Loretta Graziano. Perhaps we are not as sophisticated as we think, and through a series of habits that set the "chemistry of happiness" in motion, we will achieve that full state. This approach is based on human brain chemistry, you know, serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, and endorphins.
4.- Happiness is waiting for you, by Andrew Weil. Yes, that's right, happiness awaits you and you can reach it through practices such as meditation and comprehensive mental health.
5.- The science of happiness, by Sonja Lyubomirsky. The author brings together the research of more than 20 years on how to be happy. Although she tells us that genes can be a factor that determines happiness, there are two other factors that help to achieve it: circumstances and our decisions.
