Reading for Good Health

Reading is more than just a workout for your imagination, it can actually be a key factor in your overall well-being.  Here are a few reasons why picking up a book is good for your health.

  • Reading is exercise for your brain.  “parts of the brain that have evolved for other functions—such as vision, language, and associative learning—connect in a specific neural circuit for reading, which is very challenging," Ken Pugh, PhD, president and director of research of Haskins Laboratories.
  • Reading can encourage you to work out more often and for longer.  Sticking a great book on the treadmill can help capture your imagination and pass the time more quickly, helping you get a better workout.
  • Reading keeps your brain young.  According to a study from Rush University Medical Center, adults who read in their leisure time have a 32% slower rate of cognitive decline later in life than those who do not.
  • Reading can help you maintain your weight.  Stress releases hormones in your body like cortisol which is linked to weight gain.  According to a British study, reading daily can decrease your stress level (and those nasty hormones) by up to 67%.
